Our Signature Journeys bring together the very best of what Mainline Steam offers, blending breathtaking scenery with the timeless charm of steam travel. Our flagship steam‑hauled journey, travelling north through the towering Mangaweka Viaducts and into the dramatic landscapes of the central plateau. This full day adventure carries you to the base of Mount Ruapehu, offering sweeping scenery, crisp alpine air, and an unforgettable experience.
Ruapehu Mountaineer
A relaxed and scenic steam‑hauled outing through the Manawatu Gorge, where river views and steep cliffs guide you toward a classic Kiwi lunch at the Tui Brewery. It is an easygoing day of good food, good company, and the warm charm of heritage rail.
Tui Express

Mainline Steam is committed to preserving New Zealand’s rail heritage by restoring and operating mainline steam locomotives and vintage rolling stock. Our excursions and charter journeys offer an unforgettable way to experience the country’s spectacular scenery aboard an authentic heritage train.
Excursions run from our Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch depots, with all upcoming trips advertised on Facebook, in printed media, and on the Trips page of our website. Seats often sell quickly, so early booking is essential.
