Raurimu Thunder

Saturday November 14

Mainline Steam Heritage Trust is embarking on our biggest trip of the year. Modern diesel trains cover this route daily without a second thought, but we are doing something entirely different. We are throwing out the modern dampening, bypassing the mundane, and tackling New Zealand's greatest rail challenge the way it was meant to be conquered: with raw, untamed steam power.

Raurimu Thunder puts you trackside and onboard as our heritage steam locomotive charges into the rugged heart of the North Island to take on the legendary Raurimu Spiral. This is a full day, high horsepower assault on a brutal mountain grade. No filters, no computer assists—just pure, unfiltered vintage engineering working at the absolute limit.

The Journey

Kāpiti Coast to the Volcanic Plateau Our journey begins along the spectacular Kāpiti Coast escarpment, where the locomotive stretches its legs against the backdrop of the crashing Tasman Sea. Turning inland, we trace the rugged Rangitīkei River, crossing the towering Mangaweka Viaducts that span deep white sandstone gorges hundreds of feet below. From there, the engine settles into a heavy, rhythmic beat as we climb onto the high-altitude Central Plateau, running through a cinematic alpine landscape dominated by active volcanoes.

The Grand Finale: The Raurimu Spiral After crossing the high elevations of the Volcanic Plateau, we reach the ultimate destination. Settling into our premium climate-controlled carriages, you will enjoy panoramic windows that frame this legendary layout.

To overcome a near-impossible drop, engineer Robert Holmes lengthened the track to 6.8 kilometres to achieve a workable 1 in 52 gradient. As the locomotive tackles the Spiral, it fights a brutal 139-metre vertical climb. You will feel the engine pull hard as it rounds a massive 200-degree horseshoe curve, navigates intense 150-metre radius bends, and blasts through two historic tunnels. The track completely overlaps itself—the locomotive will actually cross directly over the lower tunnel it just passed through, now 23 metres below.

Diesels might roll through here quietly every day, but nothing matches the deafening, echoing symphony of a steam engine fighting the steel. Whether you want to watch the engineering unfold through the panoramic glass, grab a drink in the café car, or head to the open-air viewing platforms to watch the front of the train loop completely back on itself, this is a sensory explosion you have to experience to believe.

The Raurimu Photo Run-By

Pack your camera. We are staging an exclusive photo run-by right on the Raurimu Spiral. We will disembark passengers at a prime vantage point so you can watch, listen, and photograph the massive steam locomotive as it charges past, pounding up the grade and putting on a spectacular show of power and steam.

Highlights

  • Our Biggest Excursion: Join us for our premier mainline event of the season.

  • Pure Steam Power: Watch and listen to a massive mainline steam engine give everything it has on a bottleneck that modern diesels usually take for granted.

  • Premium Comfort: Travel in climate-controlled carriages featuring wide panoramic windows for unobstructed views of the volcanic plateau.

  • The Photo Run-By: Get off the train on the Spiral to capture the ultimate shot of the engine working under full load.

  • Open-Air Observation Platform: Step right outside into the noise, the wind, and the unmatched sight lines of the engine hard at work.

  • Café Carriage: Enjoy hot and cold drinks, beer, wine, and light meals available throughout the day.

Important Info

  • Photo Stop Accessibility: To participate in the trackside photo run-by, passengers must be able-bodied. The stop requires stepping down from the train carriages directly onto uneven railway ballast without a station platform.

  • Gear Tip: Sturdy, closed-toe footwear is mandatory for the photo stop. Additionally, if you plan to stake out a spot on the open-air platform, leave your white clothes at home as a little grit comes standard behind a working steam engine.

  • Boarding: Final timetables and track allocation details will be sent directly to your inbox 7 days before departure.
