The undisputed pinnacle of the journey is our passage over the towering Mangaweka Viaducts. Soaring high above the Rangitikei River valley, these monumental concrete structures represent a true triumph of Kiwi engineering, built during the famous Mangaweka deviation project to conquer the rugged local terrain. Relax in climate-controlled comfort behind wide panoramic windows, or take the kids out onto the secure open-air viewing platform. Feel the summer breeze, hear the vintage steam locomotive echo through deep mountain gorges, and look down as you smoothly glide across the sky.
How Your Day Flows
The Summer Departure: Board our premium train at your local station. Enjoy a relaxing morning on the rails as our mainline steam locomotive gathers speed, heading north into the rolling green hills of the Manawatu and Rangitikei districts.
Crossing the Chasm:
Mid-afternoon brings the main event. Hold your breath as the train crosses the massive viaducts of the Mangaweka deviation. From your elevated vantage point, you'll catch spectacular summer views of the chalk-white river cliffs and the winding waters far below.
The Taihape Interlude:
Arrive at the historic railway town of Taihape by midday. You will have plenty of time to step off the train and explore. Grab a bite to eat at a local boutique café, browse the shops, or take the kids to snap a classic family photo at Taihape's iconic giant gumboot statue—just a short, flat walk from the station precinct while our locomotive is serviced for the return run.
The Atmospheric Return:
Re-board the carriages as afternoon turns to evening. Relax in premium comfort with a cold drink from the servery as we re-cross the viaducts in the beautiful golden afternoon light, heading home as the sun sets on an unforgettable summer holiday day trip.

🧳 Taihape Station Stopover
Please note that while the train is being serviced at Taihape, passengers are welcome to explore the town centre which sits just a short, flat walk from the platform. Servicing times may vary slightly, so passengers are requested to return to the station precinct 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
