This is your chance to climb aboard a genuine Mainline Steam locomotive and enjoy a fun, atmospheric outing along the shores of Porirua Harbour — complete with costumes, treats, coastal scenery, and the magic of heritage rail.
Step back in time as the engine rumbles to life, the whistle echoes across the platforms, and steam drifts past the carriage windows. Whether you’re bringing the kids for a Halloween adventure or simply love the thrill of real steam, these shuttles offer a unique way to celebrate the season.
A Spooky Steam Adventure for All Ages
Dress up in your favourite Halloween outfits — witches, wizards, ghosts, superheroes, anything goes — and join our friendly crew for a festive journey north. Children will receive trick‑or‑treat goodies during the ride, and our Best Dressed competition will award one standout passenger a Mainline Steam gift card.
For those wanting an even closer encounter with the locomotive, our open‑air viewing platform provides the perfect place to feel the power of pure steam, hear the engine roar, and capture incredible photos of the harbour and coastline.
Onboard Comforts
Our café carriage will be open throughout each shuttle, serving hot and cold snacks, light meals, soft drinks, and a selection of beer, wine, and cider for adult passengers. It’s an easy, relaxed way to keep everyone happy while enjoying the views.

Shuttle Timetable – Wellington to Plimmerton Return
12:15 PM – 1:50 PM A midday run ideal for younger children, hugging the harbour and Paremata Inlet before returning to Wellington.
2:15 PM – 4:10 PM A relaxed early afternoon trip that fits neatly between lunch and dinner, offering beautiful coastal views.
5:45 PM – 7:20 PM A scenic twilight journey perfect for families and older kids, taking in the harbour as dusk settles over the water.
