Mainline Steam Heritage Trust is embarking on our biggest trip of the year. Modern diesel trains cover this route daily without a second thought, but we are doing something entirely different. We are throwing out the modern dampening, bypassing the mundane, and tackling New Zealand's greatest rail challenge the way it was meant to be conquered: with raw, untamed steam power.

Our tracks lead straight to Mangatainoka Station. Upon arrival, hop directly onto one of our dedicated transfer buses waiting for your group.

Viaduct Spectacular!
While making our way to Taihape, the undisputed pinnacle of the journey is our passage over the towering Mangaweka Viaducts. Soaring high above the Rangitikei River valley, these monumental concrete structures represent a true triumph of Kiwi engineering, built during the famous Mangaweka deviation project to conquer the rugged local terrain. Relax in climate-controlled comfort behind wide panoramic windows or take the kids out onto the secure open-air viewing platform.

Celebrate Valentine’s weekend with the raw power of mainline steam on our flagship rail adventure. The Ruapehu Mountaineer delivers an immersive, full day flagship experience, making it a unique day trip for couples, families and rail enthusiasts alike.
This seamless, premium option includes your return coach transfers from Ohakune to Whakapapa and your Sky Waka Gondola Pass. After arriving at Ohakune Junction, step directly from the train onto your waiting coach for a scenic drive up the slopes of Mt Ruapehu.
At Whakapapa you will have free time to explore the mountain in its spectacular summer coat. Ride the Sky Waka gondola to Knoll Ridge Chalet, New Zealand’s highest restaurant, for a memorable lunch with panoramic alpine views. You can wander the volcanic walking tracks, capture photos of the rugged peaks or simply enjoy the clear mountain air. In the afternoon, your coach will return you to National Park Station where the train will be waiting for a relaxed evening journey home.

Hawke’s Bay Unlocked
Join us aboard the Hawke’s Bay Flyer for a full day escape showcasing the very best of mainline steam and the beauty of the lower North Island. This is a premium rail experience with climate-controlled carriages, large panoramic windows, a café carriage serving hot drinks and light refreshments, and an open air viewing platform that brings you close to the sights and sounds of the locomotive.
When we arrive, you will head out to one of four curated experiences. Each option has been selected to highlight a different side of the region, from vineyard hospitality to world class dining, Art Deco heritage or simply exploring at your own pace.
